Stairway to Heaven – A Terraced Garden Paradise
Project Summary
An oppressive, imposingly steep hillside was dangerous to traverse and had no uses for the Owner when we were commissioned for perform our signature ‘angelic miracles’ in spatial composition. With over 40′ incline in the grade, from 50-85% slope over much of the property, we weren’t installing a swimming pool here! First, taking advantage of the only “flat” space, we conceptualized a lovely and functional potager: a kitchen garden with easy-on-the-back raised beds for the Owner to grow flowers and herbs. Also solved, an attractive cabinet for refuse bin storage, coupled with a vertical garden trellis for the Owner’s vines. Custom masonry flatwork was engaged, making daily uses durable and gorgeous. Then, tackling the precipitous incline, we chose the durable and beautiful Castohn irregular step slabs, nestled by planter beds to display ornamental and fragrant plants on the west and east sides of the house. A front slope, destined to erode away in Oregon rainstorms, was retained using block from a local foundry. Owner is guaranteed to get their “steps” in, now on a safe climb encircling the house, making all areas accessible and attractive. Our designs included custom carpentry for the Owner’s art panel, fencing enclosure, gate and trellising. SMART® irrigation system and lighting, and drought & deer resistant plantings. Installed by Riverdale Landscape Construction, interpreted & implemented with great craftsmanship at a fair price point. As ever, The Garden Angels design work coming to life is the talk of the neighborhood!
